Carl Fisher

Round one is this coming Monday 16/05/2022.

Procedure

1) before the day I will send out briefings to each side by PM - please discuss as you wish.

2) on the night I will do a short briefing!

3) Map movements, these will be written down, then performed simultaneously, so may not complete depending on other players

4) This should result in a battle for each player. We will be playing the basic scenario (Bloodbath) from Lion Rampant.

Before setting out the game please dice for leadership skills,

Each pair will be given a battle plan, please follow this when laying out scenery.  Please dice first for Attacker (always highest dice role, on a draw - reroll). Note the top of the plan is always North, and direction of approach is defined by the map movements. The plan will actually show a 12ft by 8ft table in 28mm (as they were designed for 15mm where the table is 6ft by 4ft),  so split into 2ft by 2ft squares, so the defender should pick a subsection to give a 6ft by 4ft playing area, please orientate it appropriately given the scenario and direction of approach, adjust by mutual agreement to make best use of available scenery. I can explain as required.

Play the game as per scenario, you may  make boasts, these can be written on your individual score sheet, also record Glory gained or lost during the game as you go along.

Score the game as per the book.

Please witness any boasts and appropriate Glory.

If your Leader has the misfortune to be lost in the game, either by challenge, unlucky blow, or unit destroyed, please dice for the outcome, as some results depend on your opponent and will affect the Glory for that game!

Hand score sheets to me!
Games Played (Armies): WAB + WaC (IER Roman, Early Saxons and variants, Normans), WFB (Empire), 40K (Spacemarines), Uncharted Seas (Empire, Shroud Mages), WAB English Civil War (English!), Operation Squad (British) SAGA (Normans, Jomsvikings), Mordheim, Wings of War/Glory WWI, Dreadball, Chain of Command (British), Frostgrave, Sails of Glory and many others!!

I have now sent out PMs to each side to brief them on the position and aims for round one.

Any questions, either post here if general, or PM me if side specific.

Let me know if you do not see a PM.

Couple of questions.

Can Mounted Men at Arms be used?

Can Armies join together and double up against one opponent?

Looking at how to beat crossbow/pike armies (Struggling) and noticed that foot yeomanry with pike go from defence value 4+ to defence value 4+ (against cavalry)?
Is this correct.

Rolling for leaders fate if lost during the battle,  executed on a double 1 seems low for WotR. It was almost mandatory? May be then the next battle is a blood fued?

Unless otherwise specified in a Scenario you may field one unit of Men at Arms mounted. However you must still have a valid unit of Men at Arms or Billmen for your Leader.

All battles in Round One will be one Vs one Bloodbaths!

Sorry the Pike Rule is Defence Value 4+ increasing to 3+ against Cavalry - for both Foot Sergeants and Yeomen. The wording may be ambiguous, but if the entire wording is put in the defence box on the chart it makes sense.

Leader will die on a 2 or 3, plus at opponents option on a 5, so chance to die are 2:9 do still quite high!

Hi Carl

More questions (sorry)

Do pikemen follow the rules for Schiltron? Ie needs a move order to form and then gains the +1 armour (against attacks) and extra defence against cavalry, then only moves with mobile (house rule)?

Do crossbow with pavises need a move order to set up? (then remain stationary/ lose benefit until reordered) or do they walk around the battlefield with armour 4 Vs shooting! Armour 4 will allow them to outshoot expert archers even with needing a +7 to shoot? Still a tough nut to crack if set up defending, but less able to walk across the battlefield as Men at Arms.

Do pavises stil get a cover bonus? Ie behind a hedge with Armour 5?

Yes Pikemen have all the same rules as Foot Sergeants or Foot Yeomen, this includes Schiltron, as per rule book.

Pavise are just armour 4 Vs shooting as per rule book no need to set up.

Pavise do get a cover bonus, in the same way having armour or a shield would. So yes they become armour 5.

I think these are going to be over powered. They are getting the same armour value as if they are defending a castle wall (superb cover rule, even better if also defending a hedge) and they are mobile?

These are the rules in the book. Remember England in the 15th century is pre enclosure, so fewer hedges, and fields in general.

As previously mentioned for round one we will use a selection of Terrain Cards, attached is a document showing how to read the cards, and listing the Terrain effects in Game Terms.

Note a particular change relates to Hedges, in this period Hedges were generally low and combined with a small ditch, and would be used to mark out fields, especially in low land areas, mainly close to settlements, the period of Enclosure has not started. Armies of this period do not tend seek out cover in the same way as they did in later periods.

To this end Hedges shown on the Terrain Cards, can be modelled as Hedges or Fences, and have the same effect, they are a Linear Obstacle for movement, but do not count as cover.
