Hammerhead 2019 - First Saturday in March - March 2nd- fingers crossed that the beast from the east doesn't come back!
Please start thinking about ideas for games - we have a reputation to uphold. I would hope that we can make a decision by the end of the year to give plenty of time for playtesting & building etc. I have a couple of ideas but am keen to hear others.

The Battle of Castle Itter - The strangest battle of WWII.

Troops of the 23rd Tank Battalion of the 12th Armored Division of the US XXI Corps led by Captain John C. "Jack" Lee, Jr., a number of Wehrmacht soldiers led by Major Josef "Sepp" Gangl, SS-Hauptsturmf├╝hrer Kurt-Siegfried Schrader, and recently freed French prisoners of war defended Castle Itter against an attacking force from the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division until relief from the American 142nd Infantry Regiment of the 36th Division of XXI Corps arrived.

The French prisoners included former prime ministers, generals and a tennis star. It may have been the only battle in the war in which Americans and Germans fought side-by-side. Popular accounts of the battle have called it the strangest battle of World War II.[2]

We'd need 1 Sherman, a squad of Heer, a US army squad, some civilians with German guns and the attacking SS unit.

I can provide a platoons worth of SS. Rob, do have suitable figures for the armed prisoners in you resistance army that we could use? The US and Heer stuff should be easy.

Just need Andy to build the Schloss Itter in 28mm.

Dan - that's a great scenario and would be an  excellent Bolt Action action but feel that it is probably more suited to a show like Partizan or Salute as a demo game. Hammerhead needs a game that can be over within an hour with a defined end point or objective. As an example - Skirmish at Stilton is not a suitable Hammerhead game [even though the public can join in] because it is open ended but can the Romans escape the ambush would be appropriate as it is clear if you have been successful.

I think if we do it right it will work fine as a participation game. It does have a defined end point- To win the defenders need to hold out until the 142nd Infantry Regiment turn up, at which point the game ends as the SS will be forced to withdraw. We just need to put a 1 hour time limit on it and keep the turns flowing.

Were there any particular incidents within this fight that we could focus on? - we may only need part of the castle and fewer figures - could consider Op Squad rather than BA. I still think we need some kind of objective to achieve - other than survive till the yanks get there-otherwise it just becomes a bunch of figures shooting at each other - even if they are an odd set of allies.

I'd almost be inclined to suggest the Universal Man-With-A-Rifle Club Skirmish Rules (aka Dead's Army).

I agree with Mike - always better to use homegrown rules rather than a commercial set as it implies more creativity and effort has gone into the game. Just had a look at the photo of the castle and the gatehouse looks like it could be done but the rest of the castle would have to be a backdrop.

Some idle thoughts from an idle fellow...
Possibly attacking forces know of secret tunnel into castle which defenders have to discover and block/blow up? use cards/dice to randomise?
Also defenders have radio link to relieving force who are aware of secret tunnel and give instructions as to location with variable/poor reception?
Saboteur among Germans? Kidnap politician as bargaining tool?
Game time is limited (by arrival of US troops) say 45 minutes?
Backdrops available maybe from aquarium suppliers?

Battle of Castle Itter now booked into Hammerhead. We should look at the whole story and pick one or two incidents to replay eg Lee's rescue mission meeting SS setting up a road block rather than trying to build the whole of Castle Itter. The outer wall and gatehouse could feature with the single Sherman parked outside if we do the attack of the SS.

Looking at picture of gatehouse, should be relatively simple to make.  Foamcard and stone effect paper should work -have been doing something similar for GOR today!
