Title: All Day Game - Battle of Marston Moor 1644 - Sunday 6 Oct 2019
Post by: Gary Martin on May 26, 2019, 07:43:37 pm
With the interest in ECW generated by Grahame's Campaign, is there any interest  for using an all day game event to run a large relight of the Battle of Marston Moor. It's the 375 anniversary of the battle this year and ties in with the timeline of Grahame's Campaign.
There is enough figures amongst various members of the club and Pike & Shotte rules should enable a conclusion in the day. The battle is the biggest in ECW but also one of the most even at start of proceedings. It also features the great generals, Fairfax, Rupert and Cromwell.

I think between us we have sufficient units for both sides. Probably want a minimum of 8 players; Rupert & Newcastle (Royalist Centre) Byron & Goring (right & left Cavalry wings)
Leven & Manchester (Parliament Centre) Fairfax & Cromwell (right & left cavalry wings)
We can add further players for Lord Fairfax and Broughton if there is enough interest.

I'm looking at the mid - late sept on the following Sunday's 15th, 22nd or 29th. If those interested can let me know which of those dates you cannot do, I will pick the most convenient for the majority, and get the day booked. Can you also indicate your wish for side/ type; So far;
Myself - Parliament Right wing Cavalry (Tom Fairfax)
Grahame - Parliament Infantry centre (Scots - Leven)

King, foot. (You saw what happened last time I played Rupert at Edgehill!)

Far too far ahead to have any diary entries for it, marginal preference for not the 22nd.

So we have the following so far:
Parliament -
CinC - Leven
Right Wing Cav (Fairfax) - Gary
Centre right Inf (Manchester)-
Centre Left Inf (Scots - Baillie) - Grahame
Left Wing Cav (Cromwell) - Dan

Royalist;
CinC - Rupert
Right Wing Cav (Byron) - Carl (assumed you meant the Cav)
Centre Right Inf + Reserve (Broughton) - Mike
Centre left Inf (Newcastle) - Tom
Left Wing Cav (Goring) - Alan

29 Sept appears to be the best date from returns on suggested dates (sorry Andy). So I will ask Mike to book the date. Another player for the minimum 4 per side still required although more than that will be fine.

I have broken the commands into the best fit for the rules. Each command will consist of a number of batalia's. The CinC will be independent figures controlled by each side unless we have extra commanders.

Title: Re: All Day Game - Battle of Marston Moor 1644

So for information Pike Shotte uses standard size units. Horse Regt = 12 figs in 2 ranks and dragoon's the same (dismounting as 12 figs). This will represent a Regt of about 500. Infantry regts will consist of a unit of Pike (16 figs 4x4) and 2 of Shotte (12 figs 6x2). This represents a Regt of about 800.
Each unit will need a movement tray 80x80 Pike, 120x40 Shotte, 150x100 Horse. This is the ideal but there is room for flexibility. I will create an order of Battle where some small regts will be absorbed into others to create regts representing the rough numbers above. If anyone has any specific favourite's let me know and I can ensure they are represented on table.
There is scope in the rules for smaller or larger infantry regts (450ish - 1200ish) more than the odd 1 will create unnecessary complications.

For example the Northern Horse, Newcastle contingent and Derbyshire element amount to about 3500 horse and 3200 foot. That works out nicely to 7 Regts Horse for Alan's left Wing cavalry and 4 regts of Foot. The Foot will form part of Tom's Royalist Infantry command.

We would be up for this as well.
My soldiers are painted up as Sir Jacob Astley's but I don't think he was present at Marston Moor so probably no use.
We both are playing Royalist in campaign but happy to command whatever you need.

Post by: Grahame on June 11, 2019, 09:46:41 am
I wouldn't worry about Sir Jacob not being at Marston Moor himself - the royalist forces would have had a range of different coat colours present so I'm sure your troops could take the field. It wasn't just Newcastle's white coated regiments present at the battle.

I would like to move the date to the 6th or 20th October. I'm giving a presentation to the Guild of Battlefield Guides on Saturday 28th September down in Windsor. This is making it difficult to concentrate properly on putting the scenario together for Marston Moor, and the pre game prep and will also be a big rush on my part.
Does either of these dates cause a problem to those who have committed???

ROYALIST

Mike - CinC (Rupert) - 2xLifeguard Horse Regts - 2x Foot Regts(vanguard)
Carl - Byron - 1st Line Right Wg Horse - 4xHorse & 2x commanded shot
Ash - Molyneux - 2nd line Right Wg Horse - 4xHorse
Pippa - Tillier - 1st line & left half 2nd line Foot - 7x Regts Foot
Tom - Newcastle - Right half 2nd line & 3rd line Foot - 7x Regt Foot
Alan - Goring - 1st line Left Wg Horse - 4x Regt Horse & 2x Commanded shot
Rod - Lucas - 2nd Line Left Wg Horse - 4x Regt Horse

= 18 Regts Horse, 18 Regts Foot, 4 Commanded Shotte

Horse Regts = 12 figs in 2 ranks
Foot = Pike block 16 figs in 4 ranks and 2 flanks of Shotte each 12 Figs in 2 ranks
Commanded Shotte = 12 figs in 2 ranks
All should be on movement trays

I will bring my stuff and lay it out. Players can fill in gaps and also replace units with there own. I can cover about 10 Royalist Horse, 10 Foot and a couple of commanded Shotte, so will need others units. It is important that the above convention(movement trays) are used as the game may get bogged down otherwise.
Any concerns let me know. Parliament to follow shortly.

Parliament

Grahame - CinC Leven - 3rd Line - 2x Foot Regts, 6x Horse(2 Lancer)
Gary - Fairfax Right Wg Horse - 7 Horse, 1 Dragoon & 2 Commanded Shotte
Dan - Cromwell left Wg Horse - 7 Horse, 1 Dragoon & 2 Commanded Shotte
Tony - Manchester left Foot - 7 Foot Regts (1 small)
Andy - Lord Fairfax centre Foot - 6 Foot Regts(1 Large)
Shawn - Baillie right Foot - 6 Foot Regts

= 20 Horse (6 Scots), 2 Dragoon's, 4 Commanded Shotte, 21 Foot (8 Scots)

Grahame can you supply the Scots?
I can supply 2 Commanded Shotte, 10 Horse, 2 Dragoons and 10/12 foot including the large and the small regts.
Players please bring what you have to fill the gaps. Regts size, movement trays etc apply as per the Royalist. The numerical difference in numbers between Royalist and Parliament has been reduced by keeping the stats about the same ( with a few unis on either side a little better). The Royalist had more Vets, whilst Parliament had more new recruits.

So I have changed Ash to Manchester's command in Parliament and Tony to the 2nd Line Horse of the Royalist Right Wing. If Tony cant make it then Carl can manage that with his Front line.
